Edit SEO in the block editor
A tour of the RankKit SEO panel in the block editor: title, description, keywords, analysis, schema, social, advanced settings and Write with AI.
On this page
The RankKit SEO panel is where you set the SEO title, meta description and focus keywords of a post or page, check its SEO score, add schema and write with AI. It opens over the block editor, so you get a full-size workspace instead of a narrow sidebar. Everything you change is saved with the post.
Open the panel
- Click the RankKit SEO button (the colour RankKit SEO logo) in the editor toolbar, top right. You can also open the ⋮ options menu and choose RankKit SEO.
- The panel slides up from the bottom of the screen and covers most of the editor.
- To close it, click the close button in the header or press Esc.
You need the SEO fields permission, which editors, authors and contributors have by default (Role manager).
The header shows the RankKit SEO logo, a score badge such as "SEO score 82/100" (click it to jump to Analysis) and a Save button that saves the post without closing the panel. A new, empty post shows "Not analysed yet" until it has a title and content.
The menu on the left has the sections General, Analysis, Performance, Schema, Social, Advanced and Write with AI. Performance only appears with RankKit SEO Pro.
General
How the post appears in search results.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| SEO Title | The title in search results. Leave it empty to use the content type's template, shown as the placeholder. The counter targets 60 characters. |
| Meta Description | The snippet under the title. Leave it empty to use the template (by default the excerpt). The counter targets 160 characters. |
| Permalink | The post's URL slug. Editing it here changes the slug of the post. The counter targets 75 characters. For a draft that has no slug yet, the field shows the slug WordPress will make from the title ("Made from the title, as WordPress will save it. Edit it to set your own."). |
| Focus keywords | Type a keyword and press Enter. The first keyword is the main keyword and drives the SEO score. |
Under the title and description, Use variables chips insert a variable at a click: + Title (%title%), + Site Title (%sitename%) and + Separator (%sep%), plus + Excerpt (%excerpt%) for the description. A Preview line shows the text with the variables filled in. See Title and description variables.
Suggest with AI under the title, description and keywords offers options to pick from when an AI provider is set up. If another post already targets the same keyword, a conflict warning lists it (Focus keywords).
The Search preview card below shows how Google may display the page. If the page is noindex, a warning at the top of the section says so.
Analysis
The AI Assistant card generates the SEO title, meta description and focus keywords in one request (Generate with AI), or reviews your content and gives it a quality score (Analyze Content). See AI assistant in the editor.
The SEO Score Analysis card shows the score ring, a score for each focus keyword, and the checks grouped into Problems, Improvements and Good results. Click Explain on a check for an AI explanation for this post. The score updates live as you write; Calculate Score scores the post on demand. Every check is listed in Content analysis checks.
With RankKit SEO Pro, two more sections appear here: Internal links (link suggestions you can insert, ranked with AI) and FAQ with AI (writes an FAQ from the post and inserts it as Details blocks that become FAQ schema).
Performance
With RankKit SEO Pro and a connected Google account, this section shows the post's clicks, impressions, CTR and average position from Search Console, and its top queries. Click a query and choose Use as focus keyword to make it the main keyword. See Connect Google Search Console and GA4.
Schema
Choose the page's schema type, add rich-result schema such as Recipe, Event or FAQ, import schema from a live page, and validate what the post outputs. Full guide: Add and edit schema on a page.
Social
| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Social title | The SEO title | The title in social previews. The counter targets 70 characters. |
| Social description | The meta description | The description in social previews. The counter targets 200 characters. |
| Social image | The featured image | "Defaults to the featured image. 1200 × 630 px works everywhere." |
The Share preview shows how the link looks on the Network you pick: Facebook, X, LinkedIn or Pinterest. See Social sharing.
Advanced
The canonical URL, a redirect for this post, on-site visibility, pillar content and the robots meta override.
- Canonical URL and Robots Meta Override: see Noindex, nofollow and canonical URLs.
- Redirect this post to, Hide from this site's search results, Hide from archive pages and This post is Pillar Content: see Advanced post settings.
Write with AI
Writes a complete article for the post with your own AI provider. You enter a topic, audience, tone and length, review the result, then insert it into the post. See Write a post with AI in the editor.
What gets saved
The panel's fields are saved with the post when you click Save in the panel header or Save / Update in the editor. AI results are only filled into the fields: nothing is stored until you save. Each saved change is recorded in the Change Log, so you can see who changed what and undo it.
The Classic Editor and Elementor keep their own RankKit SEO panels; see SEO in the Classic Editor and Elementor. For Divi, Oxygen, Breakdance and Bricks, edit SEO in this panel; the analysis reads the builder's content.
FAQ
Where did the RankKit SEO sidebar go?
Since RankKit SEO 1.2.0, the block editor no longer has a RankKit SEO sidebar on the right. Click the RankKit SEO button in the editor toolbar to open the RankKit SEO panel instead. It has the same fields, more room, and new sections such as Write with AI.
Why does a new post say Not analysed yet?
An empty post has nothing to score, so RankKit SEO shows "Not analysed yet" instead of a misleading low score. The score appears once the post has a title and content, or when you click Calculate Score under Analysis. From then on it updates as you write.
I don't see the RankKit SEO button in the toolbar.
Check that your role has the SEO fields permission in RankKit SEO → Settings → Roles. On a narrow screen the button can be hidden; use the ⋮ options menu and choose RankKit SEO.
Do I need to fill in every field?
No. Empty fields fall back to your templates and defaults. Focus on a good SEO title, a meta description and one main focus keyword for the pages that matter.
