This guide takes a WordPress site from "no SEO plugin" (or "another SEO plugin") to a working RankKit SEO setup: titles and meta, schema and sitemaps switched on, a first audit with fixes, and optionally an AI agent that can work on your SEO while you approve each change.

You need a WordPress 6.5+ site running PHP 7.4 or newer, and an administrator account.

1. Install and activate

  1. Download the free plugin from rankkitseo.site/download/free.
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin, choose speedrank.zip and click Install Now.
  3. Click Activate Plugin. A new RankKit SEO menu appears in the admin sidebar.

RankKit SEO starts working straight away with sensible defaults: SEO titles and meta tags, schema, XML sitemaps, redirects and llms.txt are on; AI agent access is off until you turn it on.

Note Bought Pro? Install RankKit SEO Pro instead of the free plugin. It contains everything in the free plugin. See Install RankKit SEO Pro and activate your license.

2. Bring your data across (if you used another SEO plugin)

Coming from Yoast SEO, Rank Math, All in One SEO, SEOPress, The SEO Framework, Slim SEO or Squirrly SEO? Don't re-type anything.

  1. Go to RankKit SEO → Tools and find Import from another SEO plugin. Detected plugins are listed.
  2. Leave Overwrite SEO data already set in RankKit SEO off for a first import, so only empty fields are filled.
  3. Turn on Deactivate the old plugin after the import. Two SEO plugins print duplicate titles and meta tags.
  4. Click Import.

Titles, descriptions, focus keywords, robots settings, canonicals, social fields and redirects come across. RankKit SEO takes a backup first, and the whole import is one batch in the Change Log that you can revert in one click. Details per plugin: Switch from another SEO plugin.

3. Run your first audit

Open RankKit SEO → Dashboard and click Run your first audit. The audit reads your settings and content directly instead of crawling the site, so it takes seconds.

You get an SEO health score from 0 to 100 and a list of Top issues. Most issues have a Fix it button that changes the setting for you, for example turning on XML sitemaps or adding a default social image. Start with anything marked Critical.

Tip If the Dashboard shows Search engines are blocked on this site, click Fix. It opens Settings → Reading in WordPress, where "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" is still ticked from development.

4. Check the basics in Settings

Go to RankKit SEO → Settings (the gear icon, top right) and review:

Tab What to set
General The title separator and the home page title and description.
Social A default social image, used when a page has no featured image.
Identity Whether the site is an organization or a person, its name and logo. These feed your schema and Google's knowledge panel.
Webmaster tools Verification codes for Google Search Console, Bing and others.

Click Save changes at the bottom.

5. Add your AI key (optional)

RankKit SEO uses your own AI account, so there are no credits and no markup.

  1. Go to RankKit SEO → Settings → AI provider.
  2. Pick a provider: Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, any OpenAI-compatible server (Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM, Azure) or, on WordPress 7.0+, WordPress AI.
  3. Paste the API key, keep the Daily request limit of 200 (or set your own), and click Save and test connection.

Now you can write titles, descriptions and alt text with AI from the editor, write whole posts with Write with AI in the editor, and draft posts with the AI writer. See Add your AI provider key.

6. Connect an AI agent (optional)

RankKit SEO has a built-in MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or VS Code can audit and fix your SEO directly.

  1. Go to RankKit SEO → AI Agents and turn on Allow AI agents to connect.
  2. Keep Agents' changes need my approval on. Every edit an agent proposes waits in the Change Log until you approve it.
  3. Connect your client:
    • claude.ai or ChatGPT: copy the Connector URL and add it as a custom connector. You sign in to WordPress and choose an access level; no token is needed.
    • Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor or VS Code: click Create token, then copy the ready-made snippet for your client.
  4. Ask the agent something like "Run an SEO audit of my site and propose fixes for the critical issues."
