AI writer: briefs and drafts
Turn a keyword into a content brief with an outline, questions and internal links, then into a full article saved as a draft in WordPress.
On this page
The AI writer plans and drafts new articles. You enter a keyword or topic and get a content brief: the search intent, an outline, the questions readers ask, the topics your site does not cover yet and the posts to link to. One more click turns the brief into a full article, saved as a WordPress draft with its meta description and focus keyword already filled in.
Nothing is published. You review the draft, add your own experience and images, and publish it yourself. The AI writer is free and uses the provider you set up in Add your AI provider key.
To write an article straight into a post you are already editing, use Write with AI in the block editor's RankKit SEO panel instead. See Write a post with AI in the editor.
Create a content brief
- Go to RankKit SEO → AI Writer. (Before RankKit SEO 1.2.3 this was a tab under Content; old links to it still work.)
- Under New content brief, fill in Target keyword or topic, for example "how to store homemade pickles".
- Optionally add Audience (optional) and Notes for the writer (optional), such as points to include or a product to mention.
- Click Create brief.
RankKit SEO looks for posts on your site that already touch the topic and sends their titles along, so the brief can suggest internal links and spot gaps.
What a brief contains
| Section | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Search intent | What the searcher wants: informational, commercial, transactional or navigational, and why. |
| Audience | Who the article is for. |
| Meta description | A ready-to-use description for the article. |
| Outline | 5–8 H2 sections in reading order, each with optional H3 subheadings and notes on what to cover. |
| Questions to answer | Questions readers ask about the topic. |
| Content gaps on this site | Subtopics that top-ranking articles usually cover and your existing pages do not. |
| Entities to cover | Related terms, concepts, products or people the article should mention. |
| Internal links | Up to 5 posts on your site to link to, with suggested anchor text. |
The brief's heading also shows a recommended length ("about %d words"), between 600 and 3,000 words.
Write the article draft
- Below the brief, choose the content type for the draft (for example Post or Page).
- Leave Add an FAQ section on to end the article with answers to the brief's questions, or turn it off.
- Click Write article draft. RankKit SEO writes the article section by section: "This takes a minute or two."
- When it is done you see "Draft saved (%d words). Review it before you publish." Click Open in editor.
The draft is converted to blocks, so it opens cleanly in the block editor. It has:
- An SEO-friendly title and the slug from the brief.
- An introduction, then each outline section with its subheadings.
- An excerpt.
- The Meta description and the target keyword as the main Focus keyword.
- With Add an FAQ section on, a "Frequently asked questions" section made of Details blocks. RankKit SEO turns those into FAQ schema automatically.
The meta description and focus keyword are saved through the Change Log, like any other SEO change. Click Write another draft to write a second version from the same brief.
Tip Treat the draft as a first version. The AI is told not to invent statistics, prices, quotes or first-hand experience, but check every fact and add what only you know before you publish.
Saved briefs
Your briefs stay under Saved briefs so you can come back to them. RankKit SEO keeps up to 50; click Delete to remove one you no longer need.
FAQ
How many AI requests does a draft use?
One for the opening and FAQ, then one for every three outline sections. A brief with 6 sections uses three requests for the draft, plus one for the brief itself. Each request counts toward your Daily request limit; see AI usage limits, costs and privacy.
Which language does the writer use?
The brief and draft follow your site language (from Settings → General in WordPress) and the Writing tone set in Settings → AI provider.
Why do I see "Connect an AI provider first"?
No AI provider is set up, or Pause all AI is on. Add a key in RankKit SEO → Settings → AI provider and click Save and test connection.
Can an AI agent write drafts too?
Yes. When you connect an AI agent, it can create briefs and drafts through the same writer. Drafts are never published by the agent.
