Social sharing: Open Graph and X cards
Control how your pages look when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack and WhatsApp with RankKit SEO's Open Graph and X card settings.
On this page
When someone shares a link to your site on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack or WhatsApp, the preview card (title, description and image) comes from Open Graph and X card tags in your page. RankKit SEO adds these tags to every page automatically, so shares look right even if you never touch a setting. You can set site-wide defaults and override them for any post.
Site-wide settings
Go to RankKit SEO → Settings → Social ("Social sharing": "Open Graph and X (Twitter) cards for Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack and WhatsApp previews.").
| Setting | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Default share image | None | "Used when a post has no featured image. 1200 × 630 px works everywhere." Choose one from the Media Library. |
| X (Twitter) username | Empty | Your brand's X handle, for example @yourbrand. Added as twitter:site. |
| Facebook page URL | Empty | Your Facebook page, for example https://facebook.com/yourbrand. Added as article:publisher on blog posts. |
| X card type | Large image | Large image shows a wide image above the title; Small image shows a thumbnail beside it. |
Click Save changes.
Tip Set a Default share image, such as your logo on a branded background. Without one, pages with no featured image and no image in the content are shared with no picture. The site audit flags this as "No default social image".
Per-post settings
In the block editor, click the RankKit SEO button in the editor toolbar to open the RankKit SEO panel and choose Social (Edit SEO in the block editor):
| Field | Default | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Social title | The SEO title | The title on share cards. The counter targets 70 characters. |
| Social description | The meta description | The description on share cards. The counter targets 200 characters. |
| Social image | The featured image | The image on share cards. 1200 × 630 px works everywhere. |
The Share preview next to the fields shows the card for the Network you pick: Facebook, X, LinkedIn or Pinterest. "Pinterest favours tall images (2:3). Facebook, X and LinkedIn crop to about 1.91:1."
The Classic Editor box and the Elementor drawer have the same fields on their Social tab.
Which image is used
RankKit SEO picks the first image it finds, in this order:
- The post's Social image.
- The featured image.
- The first image in the post content.
- The Default share image from Settings → Social.
For category and tag archives, the home page and other non-post pages, the Default share image is used.

Update a preview that is already cached
Social networks cache previews. "Networks cache previews. After changing them, re-scrape the URL in the network’s debugger." Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to fetch the page again. X refreshes on its own after a while.
FAQ
Why does Facebook show the wrong image?
Facebook cached the old one. Re-scrape the URL in the Sharing Debugger. Also check the image is at least 1200 × 630 px and that no other plugin adds its own og:image tags.
Do I need a separate plugin for Open Graph?
No. RankKit SEO outputs the full set of tags. Running a second plugin that adds Open Graph tags gives networks two conflicting sets; switch off its social tags.
Are the social profiles in Settings → Identity the same thing?
No. Settings → Identity → Social profiles feed your Organization or Person schema for search engines. Your Facebook page and X username from this page are added there automatically. See Site identity.
