Pages lose traffic over time: competitors publish fresher content, facts go out of date, and search intent shifts. Traffic Recovery finds the pages that are slipping in Google and writes a refresh brief for each one, so you know exactly what to update instead of rewriting from scratch.
Refreshing a page that already ranks is usually faster than winning new rankings with a new page.
Before you start
- Connect Google and choose a Search Console property.
- Add your AI provider key to write briefs. Finding decaying pages works without AI.
Find decaying pages
Go to RankKit SEO → Analytics → Traffic recovery. The Decaying pages card compares the selected period with the one before it. It uses the date range at the top of the page, up to 90 days (if you pick 180 days or 12 months, it uses 90).
A page is listed when it had at least 5 clicks in the previous period and either:
- lost 20% or more of its clicks, or
- dropped 2 or more positions on average.
The 25 pages with the biggest loss are shown, biggest first.
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Page | The URL. |
| Clicks | Clicks now versus the period before. |
| Position | Average position now versus before. |
| Severity | high (lost half its clicks or more, or 100+ clicks), medium (lost 30% or more, or 3+ positions) or low. |
Write a refresh brief
- Click Refresh brief next to a page.
- RankKit SEO collects the page's Search Console numbers, the queries it lost and the queries it still ranks for, plus the page's SEO title, meta description, focus keyword, dates and content. It sends this to your AI provider as one request.
- The brief is saved and opens below the table. The row now shows View brief and Rewrite brief.
Writing a brief needs permission to edit that post.
What's in a brief
| Section | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Priority and summary | high, medium or low priority, and two or three sentences on the likely reasons for the drop. |
| What to update | Four to eight concrete edits to existing parts of the page: outdated facts, thin sections, intent mismatch, missing answers. |
| Sections to add | Up to five new H2 sections, each with the reason it's needed. |
| Queries lost | Each query that lost clicks or positions, with clicks and position before and now. |
| Queries to target | Three to eight queries the refreshed page must answer. |
| Suggested SEO title | A new title of about 50–60 characters. |
| Suggested meta description | A new description of about 130–155 characters. |
The brief doesn't change your page. Click Edit page to open the post, make the updates, and paste in the suggested title and description if you like them. Then check the page again in a few weeks.
Saved briefs
Saved refresh briefs keeps up to 100 briefs so you or your team can work through them. Each entry shows the page, when the brief was written, its priority and who wrote it. Click one to open it; the open brief shows the click change it was based on, an Edit page link and Delete. Writing a new brief for the same page (Rewrite brief) replaces the old one.
With AI agents
AI agents can run the same workflow with the find_decaying_pages, get_lost_queries, generate_refresh_brief and list_refresh_briefs MCP tools, then propose the edits for your approval. See Connect an AI agent.
FAQ
How is this different from "Pages losing traffic" in Opportunities?
Opportunities flags pages with a 30% or bigger drop in clicks and sends you to the editor. Traffic Recovery uses a lower threshold, also catches ranking drops, and gives you a written plan per page.
Can it brief pages that aren't WordPress posts?
It lists any URL Search Console reports. For URLs RankKit SEO can't match to a post (archives, for example), the brief is based on the search data only, without page content, and there's no Edit link.
Does a brief use my AI budget?
Yes, one request per brief, counted against the Daily request limit in Settings → AI provider.
