A page that Google has not indexed cannot rank, however good it is. Index status asks Google directly, through Search Console's URL Inspection API, whether each of your pages is indexed and, if not, why. You see the answer in RankKit SEO and on every posts list in WordPress.

Before you start

Connect Google Search Console in RankKit SEO → Analytics and choose your property. See Connect Google Search Console and GA4. Until then the tab shows "Connect Google Search Console in RankKit SEO → Analytics first."

Check your pages

  1. Go to RankKit SEO → Site Audit → Index status.
  2. Click Check 20 pages now. RankKit SEO checks published pages that were never checked first, then the ones with the oldest results.
  3. The counters show how many pages are Indexed, Not indexed and Unknown.

Pages Google has not indexed lists every checked page that is not in Google's index, with what Google says (for example "Crawled - currently not indexed"), when it was Checked and an Open in Search Console link to inspect it there.

Check pages automatically

Turn on Check pages automatically every day (off by default). RankKit SEO then checks up to 40 pages a day, unchecked pages first, so the whole site gets covered over time without you clicking anything.

Check from the posts list

Every posts and pages list in WordPress gets a Google index column:

  • Click Check to inspect one post, or Recheck to refresh an older result. The column shows Indexed, Not indexed or Unknown and how long ago the post was checked.
  • To check several at once, select them, choose Check Google index status from Bulk actions and click Apply.

Only published posts can be checked.

Limits

Limit Value
Checks per day RankKit SEO uses at most 400 inspections a day. Google allows 2,000 per property, so you keep room for your own use in Search Console. The tab shows how many checks are left today.
How long a result is kept A week. After that the page counts as due for a new check.
Automatic checks Up to 40 pages a day, when turned on.

What to do with pages that are not indexed

  • Noindex or a canonical pointing elsewhere: fix the setting in the Advanced section of the RankKit SEO panel in the block editor. See Noindex, nofollow and canonical URLs.
  • Crawled or discovered but not indexed: improve the content and add internal links to the page, then click Request indexing in Search Console. Pages "crawled but not indexed" usually need more unique value.
  • Not found or blocked: check the URL, redirects and your robots.txt.

For your most important pages, Focus pages combines index status with search data and on-page checks.

FAQ

Why does a page show Unknown?

Google's answer did not clearly say indexed or not indexed. Open the page in Search Console for details, or click Recheck in the posts list later.

Does checking a page ask Google to index it?

No. URL Inspection only reads the status. To ask Google to index a page, use Request indexing in Search Console, or IndexNow for Bing and other engines.

Why did the checks stop for today?

RankKit SEO stops at 400 inspections a day and shows "RankKit SEO has used today's URL inspection allowance. Try again tomorrow." The count resets at midnight UTC.
