claude.ai and ChatGPT connect to RankKit SEO with a URL. You paste your site's connector URL into the app, sign in to WordPress, and choose what the assistant may do on a WordPress consent screen. There is no token to create or copy.
The connection uses standard OAuth 2.1 sign-in, and it is free on every site.
Requirements
- A public HTTPS site. claude.ai and ChatGPT connect from their own servers, so they can only reach a site that is on the internet and uses HTTPS. A local site works with Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code instead.
- Pretty permalinks. The apps look for
/.well-known/addresses that only work with pretty permalinks. If the claude.ai / ChatGPT tab shows Turn on pretty permalinks, go to Settings → Permalinks in WordPress and choose Post name. - An administrator account. Only site administrators can approve a connection.
- Agent access and OAuth on. In RankKit SEO → AI Agents, turn on Allow AI agents to connect and keep Allow sign-in from claude.ai, ChatGPT and other web connectors (OAuth) on (it is on by default). The Server card then shows claude.ai & ChatGPT connectors: Ready (OAuth sign-in).
Step 1: Copy the connector URL
Go to RankKit SEO → AI Agents, open the claude.ai / ChatGPT tab in the Connect an AI client card and copy the Connector URL. It is your site's MCP endpoint:
https://example.com/wp-json/speedrank/v1/mcp
Step 2: Add the connector in the app
claude.ai: go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector and paste the URL.
ChatGPT: go to Settings → Apps & Connectors → Create (developer mode) and paste the URL.
The app then opens your site so you can sign in.
Step 3: Sign in and choose an access level
- Sign in to WordPress as an administrator if you aren't already.
- The Connect an AI assistant screen says which app wants to work on the SEO of your site, and that you return to the app after you approve.
- Under What may it do?, pick one:
| Access level | What it allows |
|---|---|
| Read only | Audits, analytics and reports. No changes. |
| Content editor (default) | Also edit titles, descriptions, keywords and alt text, and use your AI key. |
| Full | Also manage redirects and SEO settings. |
- Click Allow access. You return to claude.ai or ChatGPT, and the connector is ready.
The consent screen also reminds you how approval works: with approval mode on, the assistant's changes wait in RankKit SEO → Change Log until you approve them. With it off, changes to posts apply right away, and site-wide changes (settings, redirects, robots.txt, backups) still wait for your approval.
Step 4: Check that it works
In a new chat, with the connector turned on, ask:
Use RankKit SEO to run site_overview and summarise my site's SEO.
The assistant answers with your site's name, modules, content counts and audit score. In wp-admin, the connection appears in the Agent tokens card as "
Manage and disconnect
Each connection is listed in Agent tokens like a token you created. To disconnect an app, click Revoke on its row. The app has to sign in again to reconnect.
How the sign-in stays valid:
- The app gets an access token that lasts 1 hour, and refreshes it on its own.
- The connection itself lasts 90 days. After that, or after you revoke it, the app asks you to sign in again.
- If a refresh token is ever reused, RankKit SEO revokes the whole connection as a safety measure.
Note Turning off Allow sign-in from claude.ai, ChatGPT and other web connectors (OAuth) stops new sign-ins and token refreshes, so existing connections stop working once their 1-hour access token runs out. To cut a connection off at once, click Revoke on its row.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The app can't find the server or sign-in fails at the start | Pretty permalinks are off, so /.well-known/ addresses return 404. |
Choose Post name in Settings → Permalinks. |
| The app can't reach the site | The site is local, behind a login wall or not on HTTPS. | Use a public HTTPS site, or connect a desktop client with a token. |
| "Only site administrators can connect AI assistants to RankKit SEO." | You signed in with a non-admin account. | Sign in as an administrator. |
| "This connection request is not valid" | The app isn't registered with the site, its return address doesn't match, or it doesn't use PKCE. | Start the connection again from the app. |
| "OAuth connections are turned off for this site." | The OAuth toggle or agent access is off. | Turn both on in RankKit SEO → AI Agents. |

FAQ
Do I need RankKit SEO Pro for the claude.ai or ChatGPT connector?
No. The connector is free on every site. Pro adds more tools the assistant can use.
Can an editor or author connect the app?
No. Only administrators can approve a connection. The connection then acts as that administrator, limited to the access level chosen on the consent screen.
Does the connector work with other web apps?
Yes, if the app supports remote MCP servers with OAuth sign-in. It uses the same connector URL and consent screen.
